Invitation to an evening lecrure with Helmut Heit and Heinz Bude: “From Nietzsche to Hegel? The China Moment and Philosophy”

Nietzsche’s influence remains unbroken to this day. Not only in Berlin, Paris, or Rome, but also in Shanghai, Beijing, and Hong Kong. The event explores Nietzsche’s astonishing success in China, where he is considered one of the most influential thinkers of the “West.” Mao Zedong was interested in Nietzsche, as were the writer Lu Xun and the scholar and journalist Liang Qichao. And when China opened up to the world in the second half of the 20th century, Chinese students sought answers to their questions in Nietzsche’s writings, among others. What did Nietzsche have to say to them? And hasn’t Hegel now replaced Nietzsche as the philosophical authority in China?

Helmut Heit has been head of the research department at the Klassik Stiftung Weimar since 2021, where he has been director of the Friedrich Nietzsche Kolleg since 2019. From 2015 to 2018, he was vice director of the Academy for European Cultures at Tongji University in Shanghai, where he still works as an associate professor of European philosophy. In 2020, he was appointed honorary professor of philosophy at the Technische Universität zu Berlin.

The event will begin with a keynote speech by Helmut Heit. Heinz Bude will moderate the subsequent discussion.
The evenig lecture is part of the supporting program for The China Moment. Contextualizing Individualism in Chinese Contemporary Art“, documenta Institut’s first research exhibition.
