Opening: Catherine Opie – The Pause That Dreams Against Erasure

  • Fridericianum

Friedrichsplatz 18, 34117 Kassel

The Fridericianum cordially invites you and your friends to the opening of the exhibition The Pause That Dreams Against Erasure by Catherine Opie.

Children’s vernissage, 5.30–7 pm

The questions of what defines a person, of what influences shape their character, how one might break away from the determining forces of social conditioning, and what alternative ways of life could be realistic options all form an essential framework for the work of Catherine Opie. Since the early 1990s, the artist has been creating a complex body of work that primarily consists of photography, but also includes films, artist books, and installations. Beyond the norm, her work proposes diverse responses and possibilities. Born in Sandusky in 1961 and now living in Los Angeles, Opie draws on the traditions of socially engaged documentary photography of the 20th century, offering a far-sighted and empathetic update.
The Fridericianum is holding Catherine Opie’s first institutional solo exhibition in Germany.
