Performance art played a leading role for the first time at documenta 8 (1987): the documenta live: Performance – Aktion – Ritual section, for which Elisabeth Jappe was responsible, set new standards. It included the performance group Black Market International, initiated by Boris Nieslony together with Jürgen Fritz and Norbert Klassen in 1985. In Kassel's Renthof, the then eight-member group realized the performance Das Brakteatenstück - a 24-hour improvisation on the subject of value setting, barter and circulation.

To mark its 40th anniversary, the documenta archive is now inviting Black Market International to perform an act lasting several hours in the documenta Halle during the Kassel Museum Night.
