Art – Exhibition – Discourse

Public conference of the documenta Institut in cooperation with the Cultural Sociology Section of the German Sociological Association

Heinz Bude, Lars Gertenbach

Arnold Gehlen still spoke of the need for commentary on modern works of art. Since the advent of Conceptual Art, works of art themselves have contributed to the movement of discourse. Contemporary art can neither be created nor understood without discourse. The conference aims to highlight the discursive nature of art: What discourses have taken place in art over the last 70 years? What forms of art have emerged from them? What public controversies have impacted art? And can we make a distinction between art for the market and art for discourse?
