Musical workshop with Ulli Götte

Minimal – in art and music. A workshop on Minimal Music in Robert Grosvenor’s exhibition

The minimal music and minimal art movements that emerged in the 1960s share characteristics such as reduction, repetition, and comprehensibility. The workshop uses these similarities to musically interpret Robert Grosvenor’s often minimalist-looking works in a playful way, i.e., using voice, language, and body percussion (rhythmic sound production with one’s own body). Steve Reich’s piece Clapping Music serves as experimentation basis.

Ulli Götte works as a freelance composer, musician, musicologist (PhD), and lecturer. His primary artistic fields of work are New Music, non-European music and jazz, with a focus on Minimal Music and Javanese Gamelan music. He is the director and founder of various festivals, associations and ensembles, some of which are international, and performs as a soloist in concerts. He also leads workshops and educational projects, including at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. In 2002, he received the Culture Prize of the City of Kassel.
