Cosima von Bonin – 7000 Palmen

Intervention in the city

As part of documenta’s 70th anniversary the Fridericianum presents an extraordinary project by the artist Cosima von Bonin who was born in Mombasa in 1962 and now lives in Cologne. The project centers around creativity, community, and festive moments as well as references to art history, social challenges, and collective longings. The key artistic element here is bunting or pennant chains whose little flags do not feature the usual triangular shape but instead the silhouette of a palm which also appears in other works by the artist. All residents of Kassel – children, young people, and adults – are invited to join together to decorate their city with the pennant chains. The idea is to involve as many people as possible in this unusual art project to share the experience. To accompany this, the Fridericianum will organize workshops, activities, performances, and concerts opening up a dialog on art, creativity, and the city enabling encounters and exchange.
