documenta 16

Easy Read

documenta 16 takes place in Kassel
from June 12 to September 19, 2027.

Every documenta art exhibition has an artistic director.
That is:

  • a person

  • or a group of people.

The artistic director plans the documenta art exhibition.
And they work together with other art experts to find out:

  • What artists should be part of documenta.

  • And what should be documenta’s subject.

A list of four points. Three points have already been ticked off.

An art exhibition is an event
where many different things are shown.
For example:

  • Paintings and pictures

  • or statues.

People can come to see these things.

Art experts are people who know much about art.
For example about:

  • different ways to make art

  • and special artists.

Many people are sitting around a large table. They are talking to each other in a meeting.

Artists are people who make works of art, for example:

  • paintings or photographs,

  • statues of stone or wood

  • or music.

Subject can mean different things.
In this case, it means:

  • What an art exhibition is about.

  • Or what a work of art is about.

Naomi Beckwith is the artistic director of documenta 16.
She has staged many major art exhibitions already.
And she has worked in many different museums,
large ones as well as small ones.
Furthermore, she worked at a famous college of art
in the United States.

Naomi Beckwith is very excited to work
as the artistic director of documenta 16.
She said:
It feels great that I have been chosen as artistic director.
Many people in the whole world know this art exhibition.
documenta belongs to the whole world.
And it belongs to Kassel.

The picture shows the earth. You can recognize the continents and oceans.

documenta shows what is important in art and culture.
And documenta has been telling a story for many years.

Culture or cultural life can mean many different things.
For example:

  • art exhibitions,

  • special events

  • or a theater visit.

Naomi Beckwith also said:
Being the artistic director of documenta 16 is a big task.
I am looking forward to this task.
And I am looking forward to sharing my artistic ideas
during this art exhibition.

At documenta,

  • artists,

  • curators

  • and visitors

can do a lot of different things.

For example:

  • They can learn something new about art.

  • They can look closely at works of art and think about them.

  • They can try out making new art themselves.

  • And they might better understand art and its subjects.

I think that is great.

Many people look at works of art in the documenta Halle. The works stand and hang in the room.

A curator is a person who is in charge of a museum.
Curators plan and stage exhibitions.

Works of art are, for example:

  • paintings or photographs,

  • statues made of stone or wood

  • or special events.
