The proven structure with introductory texts and a detailed illustrated section was retained in the catalogs for documenta 3. The format and layout were also based on the publications of the second edition. For orientation purposes, floor plans of the exhibition venues Alte Galerie (now Neue Galerie), Museum Fridericianum and Orangerie were included for the first time. In contrast to the second documenta, the works of painting and sculpture are combined in one volume, divided into the sections "1. cabinets in the Alte Galerie", "2. cabinets in the Museum Fridericianum", "3. painting and sculpture in space", 4. "Aspects 1964" and "5. light and movement". The second catalog volume is dedicated to the art of hand drawing and, like the first volume, contains an introduction by Werner Haftmann.

In addition to the two-volume catalog, Verlag Friedrich Lometsch (Kassel) published a third volume on the parallel exhibitions "Industrial Design" and "Graphik" at the Staatliche Werkkunstschule Kassel (duration: August 22 to October 31, 1964, exhibition director: Jupp Ernst).
