In a sense, documenta 6, curated by Manfred Schneckenburger, further developed what documenta 4 and 5 had prepared: the expansion of the artistic field. In 1977, the so-called Mediendocumenta presented a three-volume catalog in a sturdy slipcase. Divided into genres and supplemented by media-historical perspectives, a differentiated survey of the art of the 1970s is attempted on over 300 pages. The focus here is on the "self-reflection of artistic media."
For the third time after 1968 and 1972, the graphic appearance of the exhibition is characterized by Karl Oskar Blase.
