As in 1987 and 1992, a handy short guide was published for documenta 10 as a mobile navigation aid and portable reference book for visitors to the exhibition on site. Concise project descriptions and biographies convey artistic content and provide quick access to the most important information. In the foreword, Artistic Director Catherine David reflects on the (historical and political) preconditions for documenta in Kassel. She also explains her concept of the “retroperspective” and the ‘parcours’ from the Kulturbahnhof via Treppenstraße to the banks of the Fulda: "This parcours is a path that is as real as it is symbolic. It leads through Kassel and at the same time through the possible elsewhere, through the urban and cultural realities of a ‘Tout-Monde’ (Edouard Glissant) [...]. In this respect, Kassel can appear as ‘exemplary’ in both its unique and archetypal features."
