From the “Gutenberg Galaxy” to the World Wide Web: documenta 10, under the artistic direction of Catherine David, broke new ground in many respects. It transformed the exhibition into a political space for thought and discourse in the globalized present. Hardly any other documenta exhibition had been subjected to greater media criticism. Today it is regarded as groundbreaking for subsequent exhibition practice. The last documenta of the 20th century was also the first edition for which a dedicated website was developed: the then brand-new domain www.documenta.de. As a “backup” or offline alternative, the website curated by Simon Lamunière also appeared on CD-ROM and thus in another “medium of the future”: today, the silver disk is a media-historical incunabulum of digital documenta history.

The website and CD-ROM contain artistic projects by: Joachim Blank/Karl Heinz Jeron, Heath Bunting, Holger Friese, Hervé Graumann, Carsten Höller/Rosemarie Trockel, jodi (Joan Heemskerk/Dirk Paesmans), Martin Kippenberger, Matt Mullican, Antoni Muntadas, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Felix S. Huber/ Philip J. Pocock/Udo Noll/Florian Wenz, Eva Wohlgemuth/Andreas Baumann
