D16 Presents New Visual Design and Kicks Off Ticket Sales
From June 12 to September 19, 2027, the 16th edition of documenta (D16) will take place in Kassel under the Artistic Direction of Naomi Beckwith. D16 will be a celebration of artistic practices, collective learning, performances, music and improvisation creating new bonds and shared experiences. In times of increasing polarization, D16 will become a dialogic arena for transcultural thought where guests meet on equal footing, in the spirit of shared responsibility and mutual respect. The website for the next edition offers first insights into D16’s curatorial concept, presents the visual design and the educational program. Tickets for the exhibition and guided tours are now available online.
In a collaborative process, the design studios Beautiful Baby Limited, Data Orbit and Wiegand von Hartmann jointly developed the visual language of D16 based on the interplay of three typefaces. Degree Two Thousand Twenty Six, the typeface specifically designed for D16 by Beautiful Baby Limited, takes its cues from the handwritten block typography that sociologist and civil rights activist W. E. B. Du Bois developed with his students for a series of posters at the Paris Exposition of 1900. The series pioneered data activism and modern data visualization. As of today, D16’s new visual identity can also be discovered in a poster series across Kassel.
New Art School Modality x D16
An initiative founded by D16 artistic team member Romi Crawford, The New Art School Modality (nasm) was launched with the goal of creating an alternative model for art making and art historical research as well as establishing a global, interdisciplinary platform. In an interplay with D16, nasm will present mediation and public programs prior to and during the exhibition. From October 12 to October 16, 2026, nasm will host how to fall, a course centered on forms and strategies that attend to the risk and the potential that comes from states of falling. It examines what ideas and forms can emerge from this. Applications are now open.
Publications
D16 will release two publications in English and German through its publishing partner Prestel. The D16 Companion and the D16 Sourcebook will be published at the opening of D16 in June 2027. The D16 Companion, edited by Mayra A. Rodriguez Castro, Editor-in-Chief of D16, offers insights into the artistic practices of the participating artists. The D16 Sourcebook, edited by Naomi Beckwith, Artistic Director of D16, and Mayra A. Rodriguez Castro, reflects on contemporary thought and artistic approaches shaping the twenty-first century. The publication brings together commissioned texts, contributions by the curatorial team, and an introduction by Naomi Beckwith. D16 will also produce a record to be released at the time of the opening. Pre-orders for the books are already available online via the D16 shop.
Tickets for D16
Tickets for the exhibition and guided tours are now available online as well as on-site at Fridericianum and at Kassel Marketing. A particular focus is placed on accessible tour options in Easy Language as well as German and International Sign Language. Additionally, D16 offers solidarity tickets: You can purchase a ticket to enable another person to receive free admission or a complimentary guided tour.
