documenta archiv now a member of AsKI (Arbeitskreis selbständiger Kultur-Institute e.V.)

The end of 2020 saw the documenta archiv being accepted into the Arbeitskreis selbständiger Kultur-Institute e.V. (AsKI). The decision of the AsKI board and its members, including the Archives of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin, the Deutsches Literaturarchiv in Marbach, and the Freies Deutsches Hochstift in Frankfurt am Main, acknowledges the international importance of the documenta archiv as a commemorative record of the documenta exhibitions, as a center for preserving and documenting the testimonies of 20th and 21st century art, and as an independently and innovatively operating cultural and research institution alongside the documenta exhibition and the Fridericianum.

At the same time, the profile of the documenta archiv as an internationally competitive institution for the collection, documentation and research of the art of the 20th and 21st century art and its significance for societal, political and social developments, its presentation and art journalistic exploitation is also recognized and promoted.

The so-called cataloging offensive also plays an important role in this context. This means the documents evidencing the artistic and curatorial work surrounding the documenta exhibitions since 1955 will be professionally indexed for national and international research according to archival and scientific standards. The City of Kassel and the State of Hesse are jointly providing a total of EUR 5.4 million for this purpose through to 2023.
