It is with great regret that we have learnt of the death of art historian and curator Manfred Schneckenburger. Born in Stuttgart Schneckenburger was Artistic Director of the sixth and eighth edition of documenta in Kassel in 1977 and 1987.
In his work he specifically placed contemporary art’s obligation to reflect socio-political developments at the forefront. Together with the founder of the World Art Exhibition Weltkunstausstellung Arnold Bode he is the only Artistic Director to have coordinated the major international exhibition more than once.
Dr. Sabine Schormann, General Director at documenta und Museum Fridericianum gGmbH, on the death of Manfred Schneckenburger: “The team at documenta und Museum Fridericianum gGmbH mourns the Artistic Director of documenta 6 and documenta 8. Manfred Schneckenburger was an influential exhibition curator for whom the socio-political responsibility of art was an obligation.”
