Melvin Edwards: Some Bright Morning August 31, 2024 – January 12, 2025

Under the title Some Bright Morning, the Fridericianum is presenting the first extensive solo exhibition by Melvin Edwards in Europe.

With a forward-looking approach to the questions, practices, and forms of modernism, Melvin Edwards established his own artistic practice in the early 1960s that captivates with its great individuality and stringency.
The oeuvre of this artist born in Houston in 1937 includes wall-mounted works, barbed wire installations, freestanding sculptures, and works on paper.
Although sited in the realm of abstraction, his works allude to tangible points of reference: evoking thoughts, feelings, and images that are linked to that historical context of the United States of America from which the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s emerged.
Edwards’s works can be read as an expression of political engagement and protest against injustice. Until today, this has lost none of its urgency and is for the artist a notion that can be transposed onto other parts of the world.
