Evaluation documenta 14

documenta is known as the worldwide largest and most important exhibition for contemporary art. It has advanced to a seismograph of the art scene.

From 10. June until 17. September 2017 the 14th edition of document took place in Kassel. In Athens the exhibition was shown from 08. April until 16.07.2018. Well over one million visitors saw the exhibition in both cities during its runtime of 163 days, which makes documenta 14 the most frequented contemporary art exhibition of all times. During the one hundred days of documenta 14 in Kassel we welcomed 891,500 people. In Athens, documenta 14 was visited over 339,000 times, making documenta 14 the most visited multi-venue contemporary art exhibition in Greece’s history.

With documenta, the city of Kassel and the state of Hessen, but also Germany, owns a striking and extraordinarily successful brand, which stimulates a reflective and controversial discourse on the tasks and the role of contemporary art, necessary reorientations, and potential changes of perspective. It communicates a positive image of creativity, open-mindedness, and innovation for the city and country, conveying prestige and media orientation.
documenta has a unique position worldwide. The international response to documenta 14 has confirmed this and triggered important impulses for cultural and urban tourism. The proportion of international visitors has continued to rise. 95% of respondents come to Kassel only because of documenta and contribute to the recognition of city and state.

The University of Kassel / Hochschule Fulda under the direction of Prof. Dr. Gerd-Michael Hellstern and Prof. Dr. Joanna Ożga has again compiled these representative outcomes in an evaluation for documenta 14, which you can find following.
