Maria Eichhorn will exhibit at the 59th Biennale di Venezia 2022 in the German Pavilion under the artistic direction of Yilmaz Dziewior. Born in Bamberg in 1962 and living in Berlin, the artist is known for her conceptual approach and subtle humor. With visually minimal gestures, spatial interventions, and process-based works, Eichhorn persistently analyzes institutional power structures as well as political and economic contexts.
With her work for documenta 11 (2002), Maria Eichhorn Aktiengesellschaft, the artist created a powerful commentary on the relationship between art and economy. On the occasion of documenta 14 (2017), Eichhorn founded the Rose Valland Institute, which is dedicated to researching and documenting the expropriation of the Jewish population in Europe and remains active today in cooperation with various academic institutions.
Dr. Sabine Schormann, Director General of documenta and Museum Fridericianum gGmbH: “We are very pleased that the two-time documenta participant Maria Eichhorn will represent the German Pavilion in Venice in 2022. Eichhorn is an internationally acclaimed artist whose critical questions about art production and profound engagement with German history make her an important voice in the artistic discourse. We look forward to her presentation.”
