Portia Zvavahera: From Kassel to Brussels

Starting October 31, the WIELS Center for Contemporary Art in Brussels will present an exhibition of works by the Zimbabwean painter Portia Zvavahera, organized in collaboration with the Museum Fridericianum in Kassel. The Fridericianum presented Zvavahera’s large-format paintings from September 27, 2025, to March 1, 2026—the artist’s first institutional solo exhibition in the German-speaking world. Sofia Dati is responsible for the Brussels show, while Moritz Wesseler and Justin Delor curated the premiere in Kassel. At WIELS, visitors can explore a standalone exhibition that reflects the shared context in which the works were created.

In her colorful, large-format works, the artist—born in 1985—interweaves personal memories with collective experiences. Using vibrant colors, Zvavahera layers figures and ornaments on top of one another, blurring the boundaries between the spiritual and the physical. Portia Zvavahera has already presented her expressive works at major international exhibitions, such as the Venice Biennale and the Berlin Biennale.
