documenta und Museum Fridericianum gGmbH has adopted a Code of Conduct and published it on its website today. The Code of Conduct was drawn up by the Managing Director in a participatory process involving the employees, agreed with the shareholders and subsequently confirmed by the Supervisory Board. It applies to the organization and its employees and covers all areas of the organization’s work.
The Code of Conduct describes the fundamental ethical values of documenta gGmbH, which guide all of the institution’s actions. At its heart are the respect and preservation of human dignity as the fundamental basis of civilized life rooted in freedom and self-determination, as well as guaranteeing artistic freedom and the free space characterized by tolerance and an open world view that is indispensable for any artistic activity. documenta gGmbH is committed to actively opposing anti-Semitism, racism, and any other form of group-related misanthropy. The working definition of anti-Semitism of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance and the definition of racism of the UN Convention on Racism apply. The Code of Conduct also addresses the institutional foundations of sustainability.
“The Code of Conduct shows that documenta gGmbH takes its social responsibility seriously. With binding standards against discrimination, with a commitment to artistic freedom and in the awareness of social participation, taking into account fairness, transparency, and plurality of opinion, we are strengthening an open culture of discourse,” emphasizes Sven Schoeller, Chairman of the Supervisory Board at documenta gGmbH and Lord Mayor of the City of Kassel.
The Hessian Minister of State for Science and Research, Art and Culture Timon Gremmels adds: “documenta gGmbH is sending an important signal with this Code of Conduct. An understanding of basic ethical values and social commitment are central to the work of cultural institutions. By publishing the Code of Conduct, documenta und Museum Fridericianum gGmbH underscores its role as a liberal-minded, future-oriented institution that is committed to a clear set of values – and actively lives by them while at the same time guaranteeing artistic freedom.”
“The Code of Conduct defines guidelines for our actions and is a clear commitment to respect and diversity,” says Andreas Hoffmann, Managing Director of documenta und Museum Fridericianum gGmbH. “I welcome the clear positioning and anchoring of these principles in the structure of the gGmbH and would like to thank everyone involved in this process.”
